We have taken on the Operation Come Home $24 Challenge this year. For the week of February 6th-12th, we will each be consuming only an amount of food that can be bought with $24.
The goal of the $24 Challenge is to highlight some of the difficulties facing the young people served by Operation Come Home. The $24 figure is based on a current, true-life example of what a young person coming out of homelessness has to spend on food. For a person with a part-time minimum wage job and a maximum amount of social assistance, $24 is what is left after the cost of subsidized housing, utilities, and a bus pass.
We come to this challenge with humility, and an awareness of our privilege. We are aware that we are not experiencing the challenges associated true poverty, ongoing food insecurity, and malnutrition. Our goal is to educate ourselves, and maybe others, on the realities faced by some of Ottawa's most vulnerable citizens.
