Who We Are
The Nova Scotia Choral Federation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization which exists to serve the needs of choral singing communities, to raise public awareness and to foster an appreciation and enjoyment of collective singing in all its forms. For almost 50 years, the NSCF has been lifting up this vibrant and engaged cultural community of artists and learners of all ages and abilities, providing enriching, accessible programs and services for individual singers, leaders and choirs across this province.
Our Values
The tradition of singing together is deeply embedded in many diverse cultural communities. The NSCF aims to continue to expand the definition of choral singing by providing opportunities to build community across cultures, and invest in personal growth and wellbeing. We believe that sharing our voices with each other fosters a sense of belonging and connectedness.
We continue to encourage high standards of artistic achievement and provide opportunities for the sharing of expertise and training. This year we saw record high enrollment at Adult Choir Camp, growth in both our Junior and Youth Choir Camps, and the reignition of our Nova Scotia Youth Choir - our provincial auditioned program for ages 16-25. 2025 will see the relaunch the Children’s Chorus of Nova Scotia and a new workshop series that will inform and support our members, creating a forum for critical conversations in our choral community.
Our future as a singing community depends on fostering a love of singing in children and youth. The Covid pandemic decimated singing in classrooms across the country, and it has not yet recovered. A priority area of focus over the next five years will be youth programming and the re-cultivation of singing cultures in our schools. We are actively working with other advocacy organizations to collect data, and engaging in meaningful conversations with music educators in order to generate resources, programming and training that directly address their needs, support their efforts and reach them where they are in the schools all across rural Nova Scotia.
