Help NYWC Support Survivors of Violence Against Women
In Canada, at least one woman or girl is killed every 48 hours. Nearly 1 in 3 women experience violence in their lifetime. Police data shows that those most at risk of the most pervasive human rights violation worldwide include women, young women and girls, Indigenous Peoples, 2SLGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse people and women living with disabilities.
What NYWC Is Doing to Prevent and Address Violence Against Women:
All NYWC services directly support and educate women and gender-diverse survivors of violence to help them navigate their complex and personal path to healing and prevent further violence. Our educational and support programming helps women build skills, resilience, self-confidence and knowledge. According to the UN, there is growing evidence that women’s organizations like the NYWC help reduce gender-based violence.
In particular, our free Women's Drop-In Lounge offers women and gender-diverse folks a safe space to connect and learn alongside other survivors at weekly social activities, educational discussions and practical workshops so they can heal, gain tools, cope with and prevent further violence. Participants like Sharon are gaining so much value from these sessions: they’re discovering they’re not alone. They’re opening up about their experiences, learning and practicing skills, and participating in workshops about topics like safety planning, financial literacy, building healthy relationships and navigating the legal system. Sharon has asked to lead a session so she can gain experience and boost her career.
The problem?
The afternoons-only program excludes women, who can’t attend during the workday. Yet we don’t have enough money to fund staff, materials and programming in the afternoons and evenings—but you can make this possible.
How You Can Help:
Your gift will allow us to support survivors of gender-based violence by extending our drop-in services into the evening. Women like Sharon will be able to access one-on-one support, community resources, empowering sessions led by expert facilitators, wraparound support like hygiene products, transit, healthy snacks and childminding, and opportunities to lead their own sessions.
From November 25th to December 10th, we’re launching a campaign to raise $20,000 to support our Drop-In Women’s Lounge. This will cover the costs to organize, staff and equip the Women’s Lounge in the evenings. We have no extra funds in our budget to meet this unexpected need. But your gift will impact dozens of local survivors of violence. Last year, 83% of participants in drop-in programs demonstrated positive changes in their well-being, including feeling stronger, healthier, safer, less lonely and more valued.
We need your help now if you think all survivors of violence against women deserve to feel that way supported, cared for, and safe.
