Who we are
DTES Response began as a coordinated effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and help ensure this did not disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in our communities. We may have started out of a pandemic, but we continue to be on the frontlines advocating and fundraising for the neighbourhood.
What we do
We exist to get resources for DTES residents.
When it became obvious that COVID-19 was a threat to the already vulnerable residents, DTES Response was created to coordinate fundraising for frontline groups needing support. Folks came together to figure out how to get massive quantities of hygiene products, supplies, and food to community members. Since 2020 our work has expanded to also include those in the neighborhood affected by the housing and overdose crises.
What’s the challenge
The challenges facing the Downtown Eastside are the result of decades of urban development, social planning, and colonial mindset that have eroded the resilience and dignity of its residents. The criminalization of poverty, war on drugs and lack of resources have created the conditions that we are currently witnessing.
You can be part of the solution by helping to provide essential resources for residents.
