Protect Humanitarians is an independent NGO advocating for better protection and support of humanitarian personnel. In 2023 alone, a total of 595 humanitarian aid workers were victims of major attacks, with 280 losing their lives in 33 countries. This marks the highest number of fatalities ever recorded, a 137% increase in fatalities compared to the previous year. These acts of violence disproportionately affect locally recruited personnel, according to the Aid Worker Security Database.

Protect Humanitarians is a neutral and independent organisation, established in March 2024 with the support of the King Baudouin Foundation. You can follow our work here.

Goals

This fund has three objectives:

• Provide emergency support (medical, material and/or legal) to affected local humanitarian aid workers and/or their families in the course of their duties;
• Advance the analysis of threats against humanitarian workers and raise awareness among decision-makers and the general public about the need to protect humanitarian actors;
• Develop inter-organisational research and learning to promote best practices in mental health and legal assistance to humanitarian survivors after incidents.
