Context
Uganda has a large population of young people who are vulnerable and socially underprivileged. Many families are too poor to provide for their children’s basic needs at home as well as their school fees. This project aims to help children gain access to primary school education and support students to continue their education to high school and university.
Goals
Facilitate access to education for underprivileged students by providing high school and university scholarships and supporting H4YU primary school teachers’ and staff salaries.
Activities
- The surgeries will take place at Hamlin's Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital or at one of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's five regional Fistula Hospitals in rural Ethiopia. Hamlin’s regional hospitals are located in Mekele and Bahir Dar in the north, Yirgalem in the south, Harar in the east and Metu in the southwest.
- Patients receive complete pre and post-operative care at the Hospital where their surgery takes place.
- The model of care is grounded in a fundamental respect for women who suffer this condition and a commitment to provide complete and compassionate care. The clinical excellence does not compromise on treating every woman with dignity and compassion.
- Indirectly, families and whole communities will benefit from women’s reintegration into their communities with restored health and skills to lead productive, independent lives. The women who will receive the surgeries either arrive on their own at the hospital or are referred to the hospital for treatment.
Key Performance Indicators to be Reached (KPIs)
- 20 high school students are supported for 1 academic year
- 18 university students are supported for 1 academic year
- Salaries for 14 teachers and 5 support staff are supported for 9-12 months
Myriad Canada is working with Hope 4 Youth – Uganda on this project, a nonprofit located in Kampungu village in Uganda, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children and youth in their communities through education and health, while planting the seed of hope in young people.
