Our Mission
The mission of the Multifaith Housing Initiative is to provide and to promote affordable home space, to encourage harmonious relations amongst tenants of diverse backgrounds, and to mobilize the resources of faith communities and others for these purposes.
About Multifaith Housing Initiative
There are over 10000 people on the City of Ottawa’s waiting list for social housing with an average wait time at more than four years. Households on the waiting list do not have the financial resources to afford the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment. After paying rent, many find themselves unable to afford the barest of essentials such as clothing, food, heat, transportation, and furniture.
MHI is a coalition of individuals and faith groups who share a deep concern for people in need of safe, affordable housing. Our membership draws on, but is not exclusive to, people from the Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Unitarian faith communities.
Together we are committed to taking personal action to address the affordable housing crisis as a matter of social justice. One of the ways we do this is to provide mentoring support to encourage successful tenancies.
Currently, MHI owns 134 units ranging from bachelor to three-bedroom apartments.
