The Foundation is dedicated to the protection of marine megafauna all over the world through conservation, research and education.  The Foundation is focused on educating and engaging Canadians on the importance of research and the protection of their habitats in order to preserve  biodiversity essential to human life.  The Foundation uses volunteers and agents to carry out its activities in Canada and around the world.

MMF Canada plans on accomplishing the above purpose by working to conserve marine megafauna habitat worldwide, working in conjunction with MMF Global.  MMF Global is currently working in the Americas, Western Indian Ocean, and Southeast Asia.  Megafauna include manta rays, whale sharks, dugongs, dolphins, sharks,  whales, wedge fish, and sea turtles.  The kinds of programs that are being conducted include:

• working on achieving protected status for marine megafauna for the establishment of marine protected areas;
• awareness campaigns, monitoring,and mitigation to reduce marine plastic pollution;
• the creation of local fishery management plans;
• behavioural change projects to improve national fishing practices; and
• working with the local national government to monitor and preserve the health of the national fishery

all with the aim of reducing anthropogenic threats to marine megafauna in each location around the world.  These programs will be conducted by individuals and organizations with expertise in that geographic area, such as Associacao Megafauna Marinha (AMM) in Mozambique, Yayasan Megafauna Laut (YML) in Indonesia, and Marine Megafauna Foundation employees worldwide.
