Lovingly called “Macwood”, in 1996, this 9.2-acre parcel was saved by the community through a massive fundraising effort. Rather than becoming a high-density multi-family development it is now a protected urban nature park. Located between two neighbourhoods, this nature park extends from a second-growth Douglas Fir forest, through a protected and undisturbed K’ómoks First Nation Midden, to an alder bottom, raised boardwalk, rare salt marsh and ends at Comox Bay. After conserving the land for a park, the Society’s Board sustains itself as a charitable non-profit with the goal to continue connecting people with nature. Funds raised help the Society to meet its obligations as a charity and maintain the park in its natural condition. An accessible walking trail system was developed and now our efforts go into stewardship and rehabilitating the park by removing invasive plants which choke out natural species. Trees and shrubs native to this ecosystem are planted along trails where the land was disturbed before the woods were protected. All funds raised go directly to protecting the natural habitat for wildlife and for visitors looking to enjoy the quietness of nature in an urban forest.
