Literacy Nova Scotia

about

Literacy Nova Scotia (LNS)

Since 1992, Literacy Nova Scotia (LNS) has provided leadership to enhance literacy for Nova Scotians by supporting access to quality literacy, essential skills, and lifelong learning opportunities. We work to raise awareness about the state of literacy in the province and the country. Enhancing literacy and numeracy skills is more important than ever as literacy rates in Canada have been declining since the new millennium.

Mandate

Literacy Nova Scotia (LNS) provides leadership to advance literacy for all Nova Scotians by supporting access to quality literacy, essential skills, and lifelong learning opportunities. LNS is governed by a board of directors that is inclusive and representative of diverse perspectives, including representatives from the Mi'kmaq and African Nova Scotian community, labour, business, learners, and six geographical regions of the province. To achieve our mandate, LNS fulfills three key roles:

Information Broker: LNS serves as a reliable source of literacy-related knowledge and resources, disseminating information through reports, research, newsletters, and a website.

Training Broker: LNS facilitates training opportunities for literacy practitioners, organizing programs and conferences to enhance skills and knowledge.

Program Incubator/Innovator: LNS drives the development and implementation of new literacy programs, modeling best practices, piloting innovative initiatives, and building capacity within organizations to implement them.

Values

LNS is driven by a deep commitment to our mission and vision, grounded in the following core values:

  • Responsibility: We are dedicated to managing resources with integrity, ensuring the thoughtful allocation of funding, support, and the trust placed in us by our stakeholders.

  • Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion: We honour and embrace the rich cultural backgrounds and diverse perspectives of every learner and practitioner, cultivating a space where respect, inclusivity, and individuality thrive.

  • Universal Learning: We believe that education is a right for all, and we are unwavering in our pursuit to provide learning opportunities that break down barriers and inspire growth.
