LINC conserves nature on Lasqueti-Xwe’etay and surrounding islands and waters through education, stewardship, restoration and long-term protection of areas of ecological and cultural significance.

LINC advances education by providing lectures, workshops and written materials to the public on the topic of conservation of the environment. LINC works with willing landowners, and partners to preserve and protect the environment by acquiring interests in land in order to conserve its natural features for the benefit of the public.

Lasqueti and surrounding islands are within a globally important biogeoclimatic zone: The Coastal Douglas-fir (CDF) zone is the rarest in BC and is of great conservation concern. The CDF zone is less than 1% of BC and Lasqueti is in all of it.

Lasqueti Island, or Xwe’etay, is surrounded by another 20 smaller islands, within the Lasqueti Island Local Trust Area. We have a relatively small population, yet it continues to grow. Between 2006 and 2011, Lasqueti and the surrounding islands’ population grew by 18%. Between 2011 and 2016 it grew by another 8%. Since 2015 our population has grown again by 24.4% with Total population - 506 Population density per square kilometer - 6.8 Land area in square kilometers 73.32.

Although about 12% of the area is protected, much of that is in the surrounding islands and islets. With continued growth and development, natural areas on Lasqueti are threatened with fragmentation.
