Making the healthy choice more accessible for our community by recovering food 'fit to eat but not fit for sale' & making delicious meals.
Healthy Kimberley is dedicated to promoting physical activity and healthy eating. We work to make healthy choices easier and more accessible for all!
The Food Recovery Depot works to make healthy eating more accessible by recovering, sorting, distributing and cooking with food 'fit to eat but not fit for sale' from local retailers, farms & backyard gardens, diverting food from the landfill and improving food security for our community.
From November 2018 to October 2022, over 305,000 lbs of food have been recovered. We currently average 10,000 lbs of recovered food per month!
In our Meal Program, working with what we've got, contracted professional cooks use primarily recovered food to create delicious and nutritious meals for our community. Averaging 1000 servings per month, meals are distributed to vulnerable community members through our network of partner agencies.
Most of our recovered food and meals are distributed via partner agencies, such as the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank, Early Learning Centre, Home Support Nursing, Bellies to Babies Pregnancy Outreach, local schools, Seniors Helping Seniors, local church groups, among others.
By prioritizing collaboration, we work to enhance existing services and fill gaps in service when we're able. Our frozen meal program is a great example! It fills a niche in our community that didn't exist previously. Agency partners have improved services for their clients and even created new ones, due to accessing meals from us.
Once a week we host Open to the Public, an accessible & non-stigmatizing opportunity for everyone to access the excess of perishable foods at the end of each week.
