Our story,
K9 Advocacy Manitoba was founded in 2015 by First Nations Nurse Jasmine Colucci. The main goal of this organization is to provide rural communities with assistance to manage the overpopulation of stray dogs and cats.
Since 2015, the K9 Advocacy team has expanded and consists of a team of volunteers that work hard behind the scenes every day. Intake coordinators, vetting, foster coordinating, transport coordinating, finance, fundraising, social media, shop and transport volunteers. With this team, our volunteers and donators we have been able to save on average over 3,000 dogs/cats a year.
While working as a nurse, Jasmine witnessed first hand the need for help with overpopulation of stray and unwanted animals in these communities. With the lack of resources and local vetting availability, the number of unvaccinated and unneutered animals is extremely high resulting in a rapidly growing population of unwanted and starving animals, in turn, posing a risk to community members safety. With many communities performing dog culls (Yes! This does happen in Canada) in an attempt to control the population, which is only a temporary solution and does not prevent further overpopulation.
The lack of regulations and inability of these communities to provide for a population of this size also leads to the animals having little or no shelter, sustenance, or health care. During times of desperation, many of these stray animals find themselves living on the unsanitary grounds of local dumps, exposing themselves to countless diseases and the harsh conditions of Manitoba’s warm summers and bone-chilling winters.
Common vet bills during the recovery process include treating lacerations, broken bones, skin parasites, parvovirus, Lyme disease, heart worm, kidney worms and countless other life-threatening conditions.
We are 100% volunteer based and do not have a facility that holds the cats and dogs. We rely on fosters to assist by providing loving homes while they await transportation to our partner rescues for adoption.
K9 Advocacy relies on its generous community of followers and volunteers to provide them with donations of all forms. Ranging from money for vet bills, food and supplies for fosters, rent for our shop and travel to and from rural communities, donations are greatly welcomed and appreciated and go a long way in helping rescue these deserving animals.
Needless to say, it is the generosity of K9 Advocacy’s supporters that make it possible for K9 to provide a voice for the voiceless. While the success stories have been wonderful over the years, the thought of a losing one more dog before its had its fair chance at life, will always be heart-wrenching; and for that reason, K9 Advocacy will continue its devotion to ending the overpopulation of dogs in northern communities, regardless of its obstacles.
