When we help a youth find affordable housing, they are so excited about moving into their new place. This anticipation is often accompanied by a feeling of being overwhelmed when they consider all the basics they will need...and the initial cost of these items!

Joanne's House, operated by Durham Youth Services, helps to keep the youth focused on the positive steps they are taking by putting together Fresh Start Kits for youth transitioning from the homeless shelter to independent living accommodations.

A Fresh Start Kit contains the essentials for kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and laundry. It includes practical basics like these listed below:  

Kitchen Essentials – pot with lid, frying pan, microwavable cookware, food strainer, mixing bowls, cooking utensils, can-opener, plates and bowls, cutlery, cutting boards, dish rack, tea towels, garbage bags, dish cloths, dish scrubbies, liquid dish soap and anti-bacterial cleansers, food storage items like saran wrap, baggies and aluminum foil, broom and dustpan. Small appliances such as a toaster and rice cooker.

Bedroom Basics – pillow, pillow cases, twin or double size sheet set, mattress pads, bed comforters, bed blankets.

Bathroom Basics – towels, non-slip bath mats, shower caddies, soap dishes, first aid kits or band-aids, plungers, toilet cleaning brushes with holders and cleanser

Laundry Essentials – laundry detergent, fabric softener, clothes hangers, laundry baskets
