IGN is a small Canadian NGO with a big task -we are the voice for iodine nutrition around the world, with a vision of sustained salt iodization leading to a world free of brain damage due to iodine deficiency.

Insufficient iodine during pregnancy leads to lasting brain damage that can reduce a child's IQ by 8-10 points. Even moderate deficiency at school age can reduce IQ by 3-5 pits. Adding tiny amounts of iodine to salt is a cost-effective answer to the problem. Every dollar spent protecting children's learning ability through salt iodization has a $30 impact.

In recent decades, the signs of iodine deficiency have receded due to a global effort to iodize salt. However, as the world's attention turns to other pressing problems, we are beginning to see a re-emergence of the problem in some parts of the world, with many women entering pregnancy without adequate iodine to protect the child's development.

What are we doing to change this?

We work with governments, industry and other partners to make salt iodization programs as effective, efficient, equitable and sustainable as they can be. We provide strategic and technical assistance to support all aspects of programming. We develop or support research, from documenting the situation to finding improved program strategies.

IGN consists of a worldwide network of more than 100 National Coordinators, supervised by a group of 11 Regional Coordinators, who are in turn guided by a small global core team and an Executive Board.

Because of our work, millions of children will learn better at school and earn better as adults. By tackling the problem of iodine deficiency, countries can also reduce health costs related to even mild effects of the problem.
