About Us

Indigenous Languages of Manitoba Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the strength and survival of our Indigenous languages. We are committed to maintaining the interconnectedness of culture and language, which have been severely impacted by the Indian Act, residential schools, colonialism, and intergenerational trauma. The importance of preserving and promoting these languages is key to strengthening a sense of identity and belonging in everyday life.

Operating Principles

To support the use of our Elders, Indigenous language experts, and First Nations people for the retention and advancement of Indigenous languages.

To facilitate Indigenous language learning and promotion, as well as to act as a resource for First Nation communities and educational institutions with common goals and principles.

To facilitate and manage research into the development and promotion of language learning and revitalization.

to promote the broader use of Indigenous languages.

Goals and Objectives

To develop, promote, and implement a standardized writing system for each of the seven Indigenous languages of Manitoba.

To establish and foster ad advisory group of Indigenous language experts to assist us in meeting the goals and objectives of ILM.

To facilitate the development of Indigenous language educational programs for the Province of Manitoba.

To establish and maintain an Indigenous language educational centre.

To give all interested people the opportunity to develop Indigenous language skills in speaking, reading and writing.

To do all such things that support the attainment of the above objectives.
