Healthy Kimberley champions initiatives that embrace the entire Kimberley community, with a special emphasis on children, youth, and seniors. Our mission is to raise awareness of existing community treasures and resources, foster collaboration, and eliminate barriers to participation.
We are dedicated to making healthy choices more attainable and welcoming for everyone in our community. Founded by passionate health professionals in Kimberley, our growing group believes that healthy living is essential and that prevention is more effective than treatment.
The Food Recovery Depot plays a crucial role by recovering, sorting, distributing, and preparing food that is "fit to eat but not fit for sale" from local retailers, farms, and gardens. Since November 2018, we have recovered over 305,000 pounds of food, averaging 10,000 pounds per month.
Our Meal Program primarily uses recovered food, allowing professional cooks to create nutritious meals that provide around 1,000 servings each month to vulnerable community members through partner agencies like Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank and local schools.
Our Active Living programs, particularly S.W.I.M - Seniors Wellness in Motion, focus on improving the well-being of mobility-compromised seniors through light exercises in the Leisure Pool at the Kimberley Aquatic Centre. In addition to physical activity, we encourage social interaction by providing coffee and treats after workouts. The overall goal of this program is to keep seniors active both physically and mentally.
Another key component of our initiative is the Active Living / Seniors Activity Program, which offers a variety of engaging activities and workshops. This includes the Seniors Centre Activity Programming, featuring line dancing, Tai Chi, movement and mobility classes, and strength circuit sessions. Furthermore, we collaborate with the Kimberley Public Library to offer Active Living workshops, enriching the overall experience for seniors in our community.
