Good Food For All!

The Depot Community Food Centre is a community-based non-profit organization that works collaboratively with other community partners to address issues of food security in Montreal's NDG neighbourhood and the surrounding areas.

Our objectives:

To increase access to healthy food for community members in situations of low income, in a respectful and dignified manner.
To reduce social isolation and increase participants’ connections to a variety of supports.
To strengthen skills, knowledge and healthy habits around food.
To foster personal growth and community engagement among participants.
To promote knowledge of poverty, social justice and food system issues, and create opportunities to take effective action on these issues.

Our story

Founded in 1986 as the NDG Food Depot, the Depot has been a recognized independent charitable organization, with a volunteer Board of Directors, since 2003. In 2018, The Depot was recognized as the first Community Food Centre in Quebec, reflecting our commitment to programming that addresses food insecurity holistically and uses food to bring people together, break social isolation, build skills and increase community connections.

Our Impact

overview

25% of the population in NDG lives on less than $20,000 a year, including 1 in 3 children.

81% of our participants spend more than half of their income on rent, and healthy and sufficient food is often sacrificed in order to maintain other necessities.

People living on low incomes are more likely to develop preventable diet related illnesses, to struggle with mental health issues, and to be isolated socially.

Many food insecure people are reluctant to use food banks because of stigmas associated with them.

Food has the unmatched ability to bring people together and works as a tool over which participants can access additional social supports and resources in a dignified manner.

Healthy meals served across all programsThis includes our bi-weekly free community meals, six community cooking workshop programs, elementary & teen after-school programs, and more.

Our more than 600 educational workshops each year include not only food skills, nutrition, gardening, but also other topics of interest to our community such as health and housing.
