The Marmot Recovery Foundation is saving Canada's rarest mammal: the Vancouver Island Marmot
The Vancouver Island Marmot is one of the most endangered animals on the planet. Less than 300 remain in the wild. Since 1998, the Marmot Recovery Foundation has worked to save this uniquely Canadian species. From a low of just 23 marmots remaining in the wild in 2003 to today's population , the Marmot Recovery Foundation is successfully bringing the marmot back from the brink of extinction.
The Vancouver Island Marmot lives only in the mountains of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is one of only 5 mammal species to live only in Canada, and nowhere else in the world. It is still rarer than the Siberian Tiger or Panda, but captive breeding and release of pups is working to save this unique species.
For generations to come, please help us save this unique species from extinction.
