Our Mission
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing program dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing by building partnerships with families in need. Home ownership is made possible by using volunteer labour and material donations as well as a non-interest bearing mortgage. Families that are selected are required to put 500 hours of sweat equity into the activities surrounding the build.
Habitat for Humanity was founded in Georgia in the United States, and has affiliates throughout the world.
About HABITAT FOR HUMANITY THOUSAND ISLANDS
Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands was established in 1998 and although based in Brockville, Ontario, serves the geographic area of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.
We have built homes in Brockville (1999, 2005 and 2017), Gananoque (2001), Athens (2003), Newboro (2008), Prescott(2012), Kemptville (2013), and Lansdowne (2015). These have been single family dwellings of approximately 1,000 square feet up until Prescott where we made our first multi-family home!
To support the building of future homes, the Thousand Islands ReStore was established in 2006. Unfortunately the ReStore was destroyed by a fire in May 2008. We proudly have rebuilt a new and better home on Highway 29 just north of Brockville in the Maggio flooring Plaza. This store not only has one but two ReStore buildings. The original building comprised of mainly building supplies and the new showroom that houses our furniture section!!
A ReStore accepts donations of home improvement, furniture and building materials from local corporate donors as well as individual home owners. In turn these materials are resold to individuals and contractors engaged in home renovation projects. The net funds raised by the ReStore provide additional funding for the building of homes, and also reduce the materials sent to landfill sites.
