About INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR ENDANGERED CATS, INC
There are 37 species of wild cats in the world. Most of them weigh less than 22 kg (50 lbs). Some of the smaller species weigh only 1-2 kg (3 or 4 lbs).
Like their big cousins, the small wild cats are under threat – habitat loss, mining, oil & gas extraction, illegal hunting for food and fur, persecution – these are just a few of the dangers facing them. Many small cat species are endangered, some critically.
The International Society for Endangered Cats (ISEC) Canada was formed in 1990 to help the 28 small cat species. Our programs support small wild cat field research in the cats native countries, which is the first step to saving them.
Where are the cats located? What kind of habitat do they use? What do they eat? What are their activity patterns and social organizations? Information is gathered with the use of radio telemetry equipment, camera traps, box traps, scat and track surveys, and interviews with local people.
Without all these answers, it is impossible to design an effective conservation plan. Without knowing how large the population is, or their preferred habitat, suitable protected areas cannot be determined.
100% of donations received go directly to field research programs around the world.
