We maintain and restore the unique historical and natural features of the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway and provide services to visitors.
The Shubenacadie Canal Commission was formed by the Province of Nova Scotia in 1986 to oversee and promote the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway. We are a volunteer-led organization that operates and maintains the historical and natural features of the waterway, including providing interpretive services for visitors and engaging in related preservation and restoration work.
Constructed between 1826 and 1861, the Shubenacadie Canal stretches across Nova Scotia from Halifax Harbour to the Bay of Fundy. Today, the Shubenacadie Canal Waterway's unique blend of historical and natural elements make it an unparalleled destination for both historians and recreational users. No matter what your interest, it is Yours to Explore.
