About OPERATION EYESIGHT UNIVERSAL

Operation Eyesight is an international development organization working to eliminate avoidable vision loss and bring quality eye health care to communities where it’s needed most. Founded in Calgary, Canada in 1963, over the past six decades we have grown to become a global community that spans four continents and includes health workers and volunteers, physicians and ophthalmic personnel, donors, partners, staff and board members. Whether it’s a simple pair of eyeglasses or a more complex eye surgery, we believe everyone has the right to affordable, quality eye health care services.

We currently have programs in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Zambia. By 2028, we plan to expand to five more countries. We also have charitable status and Boards of Directors in Canada, Ghana, India, Kenya, the UK, the US and Zambia.

Global blindness is a major health issue. Today, at least 1.1 billion people live with vision loss, and 90 percent of vision loss is preventable or treatable. The number of people with vision loss will rise to 1.7 billion by 2050 if we don’t act now. Blindness is not just a health issue. The World Report on Vision recognizes the important contribution of eye health to the Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting the close links between eye health and sustainable development.

People screened through hospitals, vision centers and outreach camps in 2023.Eye health screenings are the first step in the prevention and treatment of major conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, trachoma, diabetic retinopathy and more.

People screened as a result of door-to-door eye health screenings in 2023.We train community health workers to conduct these screenings and to refer patients to a nearby vision center or hospital for treatment.

Students screened through school eye health programs in 2023.Our school education programs also equip communities with diligent eye hygiene practices to prevent the spread of diseases like trachoma.

Eye health is linked with a range of other issues. Through activities like community outreach, water and sanitation projects, we address the root causes of vision loss and create lasting change.

Pairs of prescription glasses dispensed by our partners in 2023.We establish vision centers at the community level to provide eye exams and to supply corrective eyeglasses as required.

Eye surgeries performed by our partners in 2023.We provide funding for hospital equipment and advanced surgeries, with a network consisting of more than 60 partner hospitals.

Healthcare staff given primary eye care training or refresher training in 2023.In addition to routine screenings for refractive error, community health workers link families with immunization clinics, prenatal care and other critical services.

We work with local hospitals to deliver quality eye health care services that meet community needs, strengthening areas of overlap between primary eye care and primary health care.
