Newcomer Centre's purpose is to support newcomers to thrive in Edmonton area by offering them services and resources.
The Edmonton Newcomer Centre (ENC) exists to give every newcomer the best opportunity to thrive. This mission is achieved through the development and execution of services driven by the needs of clients, the Alberta economy, and our four agency values: compassion, empowerment, interconnectedness, and accountability.
ENC was established in 1981 in response to the influx of Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian refugees who needed assistance with resettlement, employment, and acculturation. After more than four decades in this area of work, ENC remains among the first stops for newcomers seeking programs and services that support their aspirations of building a new life in Alberta. Each year, ENC serves an average of 10,000 unique clients.
As a cornerstone of Edmonton's welcoming ecosystem, ENC aims to be a catalyst for systemic change. By working collaboratively with funders, community partners, policymakers, governments, and businesses, ENC seeks to address the barriers newcomers face and build bridges to opportunity. From advocating for policies that support equitable access to services to creating programs that adapt to changing demographics and evolving needs of newcomers, ENC is committed to innovation and leadership in the sector.
ENC's approach centers on understanding the lived experiences of newcomers, ensuring that every initiative developed reflects their voices, needs and aspirations. To achieve this, ENC embraces a newcomer-centered approach, cultivating an empathic, newcomer-focused culture that fosters curiosity, continuous improvement, and an abundance mindset.
Over the decades, ENC has developed numerous programs and initiatives that reflect the needs of the newcomer community and those of Alberta's economy and infrastructure.
