Please join us in our WALK for Hydrocephalus & Spina Bifida! This event is very dear to our hearts as we are walking on behalf of all loved ones who are living with hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Hydrocephalus is caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery where a shunt is implanted to help drain the fluid. A shunt is NOT a cure, and there are often complications of shunt failures leading to multiple brain surgeries over a patient’s lifetime.
Spina Bifida is a condition that affects the spine that occurs at birth. It is a neural tube birth defect caused by the incomplete development of the spine during the early months of pregnancy.
Both hydrocephalus and spina bifida are life altering, life threatening conditions to which there is NO CURE!
The impact and challenges on a person with these conditions can range from mild to severe. Complications can include issues with paralysis, mobility, bowel and bladder function, vision, memory, and learning challenges.
Please donate and help us reach our goal. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will go far in helping us improve the lives of all individuals living with hydrocephalus and spina bifida.
Troy’s Trail annual event brings people together in Sault Ste. Marie to raise awareness and funds for Hydrocephalus Canada. This inspiring community event has raised more than $30,000 to support the programs and services the Association provides to people locally and across the country.
