HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE SOCIETY OF CAPE BRETON COUNTY

about

It is with the generous commitment of community that the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, can continue to meet the unique and immediate needs of patients and their families at a time when comfort, compassion and care are needed most.

The Society works in collaboration with Nova Scotia Health’s dedicated Palliative Care Service, hospice staff and volunteers, to provide a comprehensive continuum of care for patients and families in all settings of care during all stages of their life-threatening illness.

Locally, more than 1,000 individuals become patients in need of palliative care each year and referrals are growing. With approximately 250 patients in need of palliative care at any given time, the Society and the Service are bound together in the best interest and care of patients and families, whether at home, in hospital, in long term care, in the An Cala Unit or in Cape Breton Hospice.

While the Service compassionately cares for patients’ physical needs, the volunteer driven Society has a commitment to advocacy, education and community fundraising to provide the programs and comforts that enrich the Service’s work and support the emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients and families.

The Society is dedicated to supporting the identified needs of patients and families referred to palliative care in many ways such as providing:

  • Health care equipment and family support (basic home necessities)
  • Music Therapy (legacy projects, visits from music therapist)
  • Noel Nursing (respite for caregivers/family members)
  • Volunteer program needs (baking supplies, uniforms, decorations)
  • Flowers (pretty teacup bouquets to brighten up patient rooms)
  • Family celebrations (weddings, graduations)
  • Care for caregivers and family members
  • Pet therapy (with certified owners and dogs)
  • Bereavement Memorial Services (twice a year)
  • A peaceful and comforting Hospice Garden
  • Staff education (related workshops, conferences)

The Society is grateful to the many individuals and businesses for their generous financial contributions that support the programs and comforts shared with patients and families. While the Hospice is now operational, the needs for those at home, in hospital, in long-term care, in An Cala and in Hospice continue year-round.

As a Society we look forward to your on-going support.  Visit www.hospicecapebreton.org for additional donor details.
