Two families building brighter futures in West Windsor

Two single parents are ready to build homes with Habitat.  Their lives will be forever changed.

Overcrowding and unsafe housing can have a significant impact on children with autism. Sam’s children face stressors as a result of their current rental conditions on a daily basis.  Sensory overload, lack of privacy, difficulty with routine pose huge challenges for this family, combined with unsafe housing conditions and/or frequent moves which disrupts their routines, leading to stress and anxiety.  They are experiencing exposure to toxins, which exacerbates their symptoms and leads to health issues.  The increased risk of injury as a result of their unsafe housing conditions poses a greater risk of injury to children with autism, who have difficulty recognizing danger or avoiding hazardous situations.

As a single parent, required to school both children at home, Sam has experienced additional financial burdens, emotional stress, lack of resources and social isolation.

Both of our future families are single parent lead.  You can recognize the challenges this poses relating to financial instability, housing affordability, limited access to credit combined with the lack of affordable housing that has reached a crisis level in our community and across Canada. 

Safe, secure and affordable home ownership, that is geared to the income of the homeowner, is a solution that will allow these parents the time and energy to devote to their children – where they previously were required to focus on their persistent problems arising from their housing crisis’. 

A Habitat home will provide a safe, clean environment.  Mold and other toxins will no longer play havoc on the health of the children.  Safe places to play, room to grow and explore, and permanence created through this construction will change the lives of these families and create impact for generations to come.

Supporting construction of affordable homes for families like Sam and Adriana’s creates an opportunity for children and parents to live healthier more successful lives.  Every dollar raised will directly support the purchase of building materials - $250.00 will provide a kitchen sink, $1,000 to install a bathtub – from covering the cost of a box of nails to the cost of a roof to shelter their families your support makes a difference.
