Growing food and community

Since 2013, Building Roots has been operating in Toronto's downtown east area, offering fresh food at no cost, growing food in urban spaces, and offering support, resources and programming to empower the community. Our give-what-you-can Moss Park Market provides fresh, culturally relevant produce to thousands of residents each year. Complementing the market is our Moss Park Community Garden, a thriving space where residents learn about growing food and sustainable practices, are provided fresh produce from the gardem and connect with diverse cultural traditions.

In partnership with local organizations, we animate the public space where our market is situated, offering opportunities to engage with local advocacy groups, receive harm reduction services and support, peer support, and much more. Our advocacy initiatives prioritize equity and leadership development among residents. Our programs empower individuals—especially those facing systemic barriers—to gain new skills, advocate for change, and build self-sufficient communities.

However, the challenges are growing. Lineups for fresh food have never been longer, reflecting the widening food insecurity crisis. With over 1 in 10 Torontonians now relying on food banks, the stakes in Moss Park are particularly high. Our work addresses this inequity, recognizing that systemic issues like colonialism, racism, and poverty disproportionately impact the same communities we serve.
