GALIANO CONSERVANCY ASSOCIATION

about

Environmental conservation & restoration, concrete climate action and developing a sustainable relationship with the natural world are burning issues of our time.

For over 30 years, the Galiano Conservancy has devoted itself to protecting, stewarding and restoring BC Gulf Island ecosystems by creating a network of natural areas where a healthy environment, learning and a love of nature flourish.

The Galiano Conservancy Association is a non-profit, grassroots organization and registered land trust with a diverse and committed membership.

The GCA accomplishes its mission by:

  • Securing funds to purchase, protect and restore ecologically-sensitive land.
  • Holding and managing conservation covenants.
  • Providing nature-based learning experiences to people of all ages.
  • Fostering ecological awareness and environmental leadership.
  • Developing enduring partnerships with postsecondary institutions by supporting their environmental research initiatives.
  • Promoting responsible land and water stewardship.
  • Researching and implementing effective and sustainable environmental management techniques.
  • Monitoring environmental health on and around Galiano Island.
  • Developing and promoting sustainable living practices to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
  • Fostering harmonious, long-term relationships with local indigenous peoples and learning from their ancestral ways.                                                                                                                              Your help will allow us to multiply our impact and spread this love for the natural world around us. Won't you join us?                                                                                                                    Here are some of our successes...
  • The GCA has become a leader in the field of low-impact, sustainable environmental restoration and management practices, both locally and further afield. The GCA helped protect over 2000 acres of protected land on Galiano Island, in one of the most ecologically sensitive areas of BC. More projects are underway!
  • The GCA's Millard Learning Centre is a “living laboratory” for ecological restoration, sustainable food production and small-scale, renewable energy generation, featuring a compost ‘hotspot’, a native plant nursery, the Nuts’a’maat Forage Forest, a permaculture food forest and a “net-zero” grid-tied solar array.
  • The GCA is renowned for its environmental education programs. Our K-12 programs help youth build lifelong memories through nature exploration. Our post-secondary programs provide the skills necessary to pursue environmental careers through field experience, courses, internships and volunteer opportunities. Our adult programs focus on community, skills-building, environmental stewardship and climate action, under the guidance of experts and indigenous leaders.
  • The GCA is a climate action leader. Among other initiatives, our One Island, One Earth project determined Galiano Island’s ecological footprint based on transportation, food, buildings & stationary energy, consumables & waste, water and biocapacity data. These findings are helping us gain a better understanding of how to reduce our environmental impact. The GCA is also sharing this information with neighboring communities to help them minimize their own footprint.                                                                                                  Find out more about us here: https://galianoconservancy.ca
