Frog in Hand is a dance-theatre company based in Mississauga, Ontario. Creation, Performance, Education in the arts. Stories that Move.
Frog in Hand is Mississauga's only site-specific dance-theatre company. We uncover, make, and share stories through dance. We support the arts sector by sharing resources, knowledge and experience through creation, performance and education. Founded by two sisters, Colleen Snell & Noelle Hamlyn, we have created over 45 original works and hosted 3 interdisciplinary festivals. Frog in Hand is committed to wisdom exchange, and offers unique learning opportunities across the GTA.We craft innovative work reflecting our passion for movement as a medium to transcend language. As a site-specific dance company, we have performed in many startling and unusual spaces, including heritage sites, parks, fields, cafes, a brewery, in a fountain, laundromat, and an arena. Our first full-length show, Creature (2016), was an immersive site-specific performance in the Small Arms Inspection Building, produced in partnership with local advocates seeking to transform the site into a cultural hub. It was a milestone in our community.
Our new creative home, The Art Shelter, began as a post-pandemic response. It is a repurposed geodesic dome from Arctic Acres - and we built it ourselves with the help of an amazing volunteer team. The Art Shelter is artist-run and community-led, and as an off-grid (solar powered) space, it is an intentional act of climate leadership. With this project, we hope to do more with less in ways that are socially inclusive, environmentally proactive, and better aligned with an unpredictable future.
Still wondering if you should invest in Frog in Hand? Here are some key points:• We serve, prioritize and represent equity deserving groups (in 2024 we supported over 109 young artists with 600+ hours of meaningful mentorship, and our surveys and statistics show strong self-identification of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ groups among our team)• We always prioritize Mississauga, our home town and backyard, working at a hyper-local level to make positive social change• We offer programming for all levels (2023/24 over 200 workshops & classes)• We perform across Mississauga and beyond, AND we strive to make our process visible to the public through outdoor rehearsals, and our transparent geodome• We’re prolific and critically acclaimed (with 5 original shows over the past 7 years with 40 sold-out performances)• We're innovative placemakers (we built the Art Shelter from the ground up to support the critical lack of creative space in Ontario)
