Imaginative Body Classes
Align your physicality with your imagination. Source your personal imagery. Get the body moving, get the mind flowing.Developed for actors, musicians, dancers and people who like to move, the classes connect anatomical (both metaphoric and actual) imagery to the inherent poetry and virtuosity in the body. The classes can be used as exploration for choreography or character, but are intended primarily to offer the practice of being present, paying deep attention to the messages and impulses of the body and to allow participants to exert themselves in a pleasurable way.
The classes unite influences from Lucy's training and performance experience in butoh, post-modern improvisation, contemporary dance, yoga and theatre. Other influences include Lucy's childhood growing up with conservationist/naturalist parents. There is a strong connection to the imagery of nature, the instincts of the body that lie under intellectual pursuits, and the imagery of physics and cosmology. These classes are fun and rigorous and connect people to new aspects of their physicality. We work through improvised explorations, breaking habits, discovering new strengths and how images can support the technical aspects of performance.

Our guest Instructor - Lucy Rupert - May 25 and June 1 2020
Lucy Rupert is the artistic director of Blue Ceiling dance, through which she creates, commissions, produces and performs. Her repertoire has toured throughout Ontario and to New York and Germany, presented by the National Ballet of Canada (Choreographic Workshop), DanceWorks, Dance Ontario, Dusk Dances, dance: made in Canada/fait au Canada, the Stuttgart Solo International Tanz Theater Festival and WAXWorks Brooklyn.
Lucy’s work embodies her strong curiosity about the translation of ideas from science into physical, dynamic practice, and a reverence for intergenerational casts and diverse bodies. Lucy writes about the art-science intersection on her blog, blueceilingdancer.blogspot.com, including interviews with prominent local scientists and reflections on creative works from this intersectional perspective.
As a freelance artist in theatre and dance, Lucy has performed for Fujiwara Dance Inventions, Theatre Rusticle, Marie-Josée Chartier, Nova Bhattacharya, Theatre Passe-Muraille, William Yong, Sashar Zarif, Anandam Dance, Puppetmongers Theatre, and Circus Orange, among others.
