Overview

Mindful Motions for your Mood

In this workshop, we will explore specific therapeutic techniques having to do with different types and paces of movement and their effect on mood, emotional regulation, and the nervous system from a more neurological point of view. Many studies show correlations between specific styles of movement and their effect on mood and emotion, but since this varies so much among individuals, we will have the chance to notice and identify inner body sensations and explore meaning through the experiential and group components of the workshop. Participants will have a chance to discover (and possibly re-connect to) ways of moving that increase their own resiliency and well-being, and how it can easily be incorporated more into everyday life. Research shows the concept of interoception—sensing the internal state of the body—to be an important therapeutic concept; this workshop will focus on the ability to tune into that felt sense and enhance awareness and beneficial use of the brilliant mind-body connections that exist in each of us. Since the group is conducted through a therapeutic lens, there will be opportunities to share and process individuals’ experiences (if desired) and the group experience as a whole.

Part 1 will start off with an exploration of slower, more methodical movements and mindfulness (attuning to the self)

Part 2 will explore some more dynamic and higher intensity/rhythmic movements (with adaptations if needed), and involve the sharing of experiences, reviewing material, and attuning to group energy.

Details

Trained in dance and theatre performance, Alex received her BFA in Acting in 2011, and in 2012, she completed the vigorous Globe Theatre Conservatory Actor Training program. She trained in ballet and folk dance growing up and was a member of the Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble in Saskatoon for 9 years, as well as Free Flow Dance Theatre for 2.5 years. After many other programs, workshops, and experiences on stage as an actor, dancer, and physical storyteller, and behind the scenes as a director and choreographer in the last decade, she is now working toward becoming an art therapist. At this stage in her journey, Alex is in the last phase of completing a practicum for a Master’s degree in counseling psychology and is an eager participant in an Expressive Movement Facilitation certificate program. Because of her background, Alex has always been curious about using the body, creative tactics, and expressivity as a mode of healing.  She practices counseling from a holistic, person-centered perspective-- using empathy and a calm presence to truly understand others’ experiences.
