Discovering and Developing Authentic Movement

Movement is an international language. It transcends words and connects all individuals as a method of communication. Through the exploration of movement, we seek to gain a better understanding of ourselves and others. It can express physical, emotional, spiritual, and primal human experiences in a way that no other form of communication can.

In order to find and develop authentic movement, we will push past our movement comfort zones into new methods of moving. We need to learn to recognize and when needed, discard old movement behaviors and patterns to make room for new ones.

Using imagery and precise directives the class will attempt to find authenticity through movement with a focus on communication. It is possible to discuss and describe complex ideas through movement in a clear way. Come with ideas for current or future work, newer choreographies, and movement explorations. Bring a notebook.

Details

As an instructor Jackie endeavors to communicate her own passion for movement and dance to her students. She believes that a motivated and passionate teacher creates motivated and passionate student behaviors. Jackie cultivates an environment that is a “safe” place to explore physical creativity by providing knowledge and respect for the materials and exercises yet believes in maintaining a sense of “play within work”. We can learn to combine critical thinking and creativity to problem solve. This combination of theory and activity is essential to enhance our lifelong relationship with our minds, bodies, and spirits. It is essential for the continual development of our craft

Jackie Latendresse is an alumnus of the University of Waterloo where she obtained her H.B.A. in Dance with a minor in Fine Arts. She founded the Free Flow Dance Company and its adjoining studio in 1995, in Kitchener Ontario. The Company relocated to Toronto in the winter of 1996 and has since found a home base in Saskatoon for the past 17 years.
