about

About the Forum

The Forum of Federations is an international organization that develops and shares comparative expertise on the practice of federal and decentralized governance through a global network. We provide innovative solutions to challenges posed by multi-level governance in a range of devolved, decentralized or federal countries. We are a non-advocacy organization, concerned with bringing together international experiences on governance to support other countries’ transition to and implementation of federal systems.

Our mission is to strengthen inclusive and responsive governance, including pluralism and gender equality, in federal, decentralized, and transitioning countries.

The Forum works in three main areas to advance this mission:

  1. The development of knowledge products
  2. Development Assistance Programs
  3. Policy Programs

Working with 10 partner countries around the world: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Switzerland, the Forum utilizes a comparative methodology in the implementation of our activities.

The advantage of the Forum comes from our continuous support of governments and citizens by means of our network's high-level of expertise and our hands-on experience providing capacity-building workshops and impartial practical education. We focus on the key issues of local empowerment to promote inclusive multi-level governance and democracy, including assisting with democracy building in fragile states and post-conflict situations.

The Forum’s direct relationship with governments on each continent makes us uniquely placed to promote intergovernmental learning by working in tandem with our partner governments.

The Forum provides expertise to bridge the worlds of academic research and real-world practice so we may continue learning from each other.
