The conservation of aquatic ecosystems through active citizen engagement… this is what we’re all about!
The Education and Water Monitoring Action Group (EWAG) is an organisation that encourages youth and their community to develop a strong sense of connection to nature through the implementation of citizen science projects that combine the ecological monitoring and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.
Improving the health of our rivers is thus at the heart of our mission and directly linked to improving human health in both urban and rural environments.
As an active proponent of citizen science for over 30 years, the EWAG encourages the active participation of communities in the protection of aquatic ecosystems. Its flagship program « Adopt a River » and its many components are implemented across Quebec and Canada through the EWAG’s vast network of stakeholders and partners.

- 39 000 students, 300 educators taking action to protect their river
- 35 community groups involved in implementing and coordinating the Adopt a River program
- 207 000 hours spent protecting rivers, representing a 2.3 million dollar investment
- 100 000 trees and shrubs planted, 7 times the size of the Mont-Royal park
- 409 kilometers of shoreline protected or restored
- more than 100 species observed contributing to assessing the health of aquatic ecosystems
- 316 hectares of shoreline cleaned, the equivalent of 7 football fields
- 270 tons of garbage collected
- 269 rivers monitored and ADOPTED!
