Ecotrust Canada develops innovative economic solutions that promote environmental sustainability and social equity.

For 30 years, we’ve been proving it’s possible to create healthy localized economies and resilient communities by embracing the connection between social and environmental well-being. The results are extraordinarily compelling.

Projects in fisheries, forest carbon, energy security, housing, and food systems have developed replicable economic models with catalytic potential. But much more work has to be done.

Like others around the world, we’ve witnessed how easily progress can be unraveled when viable alternatives to broken economic models aren’t readily available. We need to ensure that promising innovations become available to all communities.

Our Impact

Our systems of financial, social, and environmental management systems are falling apart and we are seeing growing social, political, economic, and environmental divides.

Rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Canada are on the front lines of accelerating climate change, deepening energy poverty, increasing costs and declining catches in our fisheries, and a continuing crisis of housing for Indigenous communities.

These are problems deeply rooted in our political and economic systems, and it’s on the latter – the economy – that Ecotrust Canada applies itself in order to create solutions for the future. These solutions show that the economy can simultaneously provide meaningful work and good livelihoods, support vibrant communities and the recognition of Indigenous rights and title, and conserve and restore the environment. We engage at the community level through trusted relationships, and by invitation, because we believe communities are a critical locus of action and stewardship.

COMMUNITY FISHERIES POLICY WORKOur policy work is aimed at building a sustainable, fair and prosperous commercial fisheries that benefits 5,000 independent fish harvesters, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, up and down the West Coast

MEASURING IMPACT FROM THE BELLA BELLA HEAT PUMP PROJECTSavings were approximately $1,650 per household, per year, and the community is seeing improved health benefits and reduced fossil fuel dependency in homes that installed the heat pumps.
