2024 Holiday Season Match Funding Campaign

This Holiday Season, Invest in a Brighter Future for Indigenous Guatemalan Girls and Young Women

The odds are stacked against Indigenous girls in Guatemala. In communities like Chivarabal, Chuatzunuj, and Tecpan where Project Somos works, most girls leave school after only 1.8 years, often due to family responsibilities, a lack of resources, or deeply rooted cultural expectations. But with your help, we can change this story and open doors to brighter futures.

Project Somos is working to empower these girls through educational and personal development programs that address key challenges. Many of these young women suffer from low self-esteem and rarely have a voice in their communities. By providing workshops on self-worth, self-care, and autonomy, we’re helping them recognize their own value and inspiring them to dream bigger.

Connection and inspiration are also essential. We encourage these girls to form friendships and learn from visiting volunteers, which expands their horizons and connects them with new perspectives beyond their community. For many of them, the concept of lifelong learning is new; our programs introduce them to ongoing education and offer them knowledge and opportunities to explore the world outside their immediate surroundings.

Our practical skills training includes everything from cooking and handicrafts to entrepreneurship and organic farming. These sessions equip girls with skills for independence and resilience, setting them up for a self-sufficient future. Leadership and sisterhood are at the heart of our program, as we’re nurturing a generation of young leaders who will advocate for their peers and work together to uplift their communities.

This holiday season, donate $135 today to provide essential education programming for a young girl. Your gift supports workshops on self-worth, vocational training in cooking and crafts, and leadership development—empowering her with the skills and confidence to pursue her dreams and build a better future.

Young women like Fatima.
Fatima lives with a developmental disability, and her school simply doesn’t have the resources or training to meet her needs. At her public school, instead of finding friends, she has encountered hurtful teasing, leaving her feeling rejected. After coming home from school in tears every day, begging not to return, her mother, who faces her own health struggles, made the difficult decision to keep her at home.
But she didn’t give up; she found a new path forward for her daughter with us here at Project Somos.
At Project Somos, Fatima is not only accepted, she is cherished. Here, she learns at her own pace with compassionate teachers who are patient, kind, and dedicated. She plays, explores, bakes, and finds comfort in nature, making friends and feeling valued in a way she never has before.
For Fatima, Project Somos is a place of warmth and love, and she tells her mother daily that this is where she wants to be.Through our girls’ program, Fatima has a safe place where she can be herself, grow, and learn, surrounded by the support and kindness she deserves. Her journey isn’t easy, but with a nurturing community around her, Fatima is discovering her unique strength, voice and who she really is.
