CRIS provides trained volunteers & staff along and adaptive equipment to make the outdoors accessible for persons living with any disability
The Community Recreational Initiatives Society (CRIS) is a non-profit organization that provides adaptive recreation programs for people living with disabilities. Since 2001 we have supported persons of all ages with physical, cognitive, sensory, mental, and other disabilities by developing and implementing outdoor recreation programs.
These programs promote independence, assist with integration and inclusion, reduce isolation, and improve the overall well-being of these individuals, their families, and ultimately their communities. From urban outings around the city, to backcountry expeditions, to adaptive equipment rentals, CRIS' mission is to break down barriers to the outdoors for persons living with disabilities. We promote inclusion and accessibility to ensure everyone has the opportunity to experience the therapeutic benefits of time spent in nature.
In 2023 across our three charitable programs; Adaptive Adventures, Accessible Wilderness Expeditions, and Adaptive Rentals, we provided 1130 client outings for a total of 2639 hours outside participating in adaptive recreation. These activities included hiking, cycling, paddle boarding, kayaking, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and whitewater rafting. The impact of these programs is far reaching, but it is best described by our clients themselves:
"My daughter has limited mobility, but loves to be involved in outdoor adventures. The specialized equipment and trained volunteers that CRIS brings makes all the difference and allows her to be included. She can't tell us with words, but we can see from her laughs and smiles how much she loves the activities. After a CRIS outing she is happy, relaxed, and content. The CRIS days are a vital part of her overall health."
