about

About the Community Care Foundation

Since 1985, Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes has helped build healthy communities through care and support for people of all ages.  Together with our network partners, staff and volunteers, we deliver a wide range of Home and Community Support services, Health and Wellness programs and Hospice Palliative Care across the City of Kawartha Lakes. We engage the public in pursuit of lifestyles that create a sense of community and improve quality of life. We strive for better health outcomes by reducing barriers to care and by responding to community need.  We believe that in a healthy community, people come together to care for each other.  Our goal is to help make this possible.

We Need Your Help!

While Community Care receives some government funding for core programs, we need to rely on our community donations for unfunded or underfunded services, to keep our fees affordable and to also offer programming free of charge to client experiencing financial challenges.

Nearly everyone is feeling the effects of COVID-19, but some, especially the most vulnerable, are struggling more than others. Those who already face barriers—things like financial challenges, chronic medical issues and social isolation—need even more help during this time.  As the pandemic unfolds, our most vulnerable people are in urgent need of help.  The pandemic has:

  • Caused sudden unemployment, making many unable to pay for basic needs.
  • Left many people feeling completely isolated and alone, some with no family to turn to and few supports to help them get by.
  • Intensified underlying health issues as a result of healthcare and community support closures.
  • Widespread anxiety and uncertainty about the future.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, we have adapted and changed the way we provide our programs and services to allow us to safely support our clients and their families through and beyond this pandemic

Your donation keep us strong and helps us do what we do best— provide care, comfort and hope to the increasing number of people who need it.

With the support of your donation, Community Care can:

  • Ease food and financial insecurity- Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals for those in need right to their doorstep. As the majority of our MOW clients are seniors who are discouraged from leaving home, it is not surprising that during COVID the program has grown by twenty-seven percent!
  • Transform Hurt into Hope: Our palliative care services and bereavement programs support individuals and families coping with advanced illness and grief. COVID has complicated grief further, with increased anxieties, visitation restrictions and cancelled group support meetings. At Hospice Services, we know in the coming months, this may lead to an even greater need for our supports.
  • Protect Staff and Those We Serve: Like so many other essential services, we’ve been impacted by the global shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In order to continue to provide our programs and services, we need a constant supply of PPE for the foreseeable future. Your donation will go a long way towards offsetting these unexpected costs to help us continue to invest in our programs and services
  • Comfort For our Caregivers: Due to the pandemic’s physical distancing protocols, our Adult Day Program (ADP) is closed temporarily.  ADP promotes health and wellbeing through opportunities to socialize and participate in supervised therapeutic and recreational programming in a safe setting, while also providing respite opportunities to their caregivers.  Losing ADP means that family caregivers have lost this opportunity for respite.  As caregivers and their loved ones have been isolated during the pandemic, caregiver responsibilities have increased in intensity and many are experiencing exhaustion. That’s why support for them now and after the crisis is more important than ever.  By providing increased respite and friendly visiting opportunities, we can give Caregivers a much needed and well deserved break from their caregiver duties, helping them to cope.
  • Care At the Ready: When COVID restrictions are reduced, there will be a need to schedule as many client visits to our Community Health Centre and Dental Clinic as possible in order to quickly catch-up. Expediting care means adding staff, equipment and extending operating hours. Your help will make a meaningful difference in ensuring we have everything in place to increase our capacity to provide care when we can.
  • Ensuring Transportation for Essential Medical Care: Our drivers are still behind the wheel and on the front lines. Specialized Transportation continues to provide much-needed access to essential medical treatments including dialysis and cancer treatments for hundreds of community-based individuals.  Help keep our vans on the road and our drivers behind the wheel.  Each year, we need to replace at least one of these fully accessible vans.

Thank you for your support.  Every contribution is valued and will make a difference.  Please stay safe, healthy and optimistic. Together we will get through this.
