About Campaign

In 1986, I volunteered to teach in a remote village in Swaziland. I was to teach reading, but the school had only one book available to the class. Unfortunately, the reading ability amongst the children varied drastically, setting up an impossible task for the book provided, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles.

After futile efforts to teach a novel few could read, and none understood, I received permission to teach another book, but only if I bought the books myself. I travelled to the central city and found a novel about a boy growing up in a changing Africa.

I will never forget the wonderment I saw when they read this book. It was a story they could relate to and identify with the main character. I have witnessed the joy that a book can bring to a child, and I am on this trek to raise money for Code to help bring books to children.

100% of your donation will help start a new literacy project in Tanzania.

My fundraising goal is $15,000.
