Our Mission
CJFE monitors, defends and reports on free expression and access to information in Canada and abroad. Rooted in the field of journalism, we promote a free media as essential to a fair and open society. CJFE boldly champions the free expression rights of all people, and encourages and supports individuals and groups in the protection of their own and others' free expression rights.
Why Support CJFE
Having a strong base of support is essential for CJFE to achieve its purpose not only of defending the rights of citizens but also of contributing to the development of press freedom and freedom of expression throughout the world.
CJFE’s work includes:
- Advocacy and policy work in Canada, including a Charter challenge against Bill C-51, campaigning for access to information reform and digital privacy rights, and publishing the annual Review of Free Expression in Canada.
- International campaigns, including the Snowden Archive of all documents leaked by Edward Snowden, the successful #FreeAjstaff campaign to free Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy from Egyptian prison, and letters of protest to governments around the world.
- Fellowship programs, including the Scotiabank/Massey College Journalism Fellowship for South American journalists to study in Canada, and the Bob Carty Free Expression Fellowship for Canadian projects about free expression.
- Funding programs, including the Journalists in Distress Fund, which provides humanitarian assistance to journalists and media workers whose lives and well-being are threatened because of their work.
