The CFMTA/FCAPM supports young Canadian musicians in their journey towards excellence. Scholarship programs, competitions, and awards are open to all legal citizens of Canada currently studying with a registered music teacher. Donated funds go directly to award recipients. Charitable donation tax receipts are provided to donors.
Our Mission
The CFMTA/FCAPM been involved in music education in Canada since its founding in 1935. Through professional development projects and a variety of competitions, we promote and support a high standard of pedagogy among our provincial and territorial members.
Working with provincial and territorial registered music teacher associations, CFMTA supports Canadian musicians and their contribution to our unique Canadian culture; while providing opportunities for our members to further enhance musical experiences in their Canadian communities.

Award and Scholarship Programs
- 2025 Piano Competition Scholarship – Awards will be presented at the National Piano Competition in Montreal Qc, July 4, 2025. All donations will be acknowledged during the event and larger contributions may be directed towards a specific composer, genre, or historical period. - 2027 Multi-discipline Competition Scholarship – This award will be directed to the disciplines of strings, woodwind, or brass. All donations will be acknowledged during the event. - Bette-Joan Rac Piano Scholarship (Alberta only) – This award celebrates the life of a revered Edmonton piano teacher by supporting students in need of financial aid.
- Essay Competition Prize Fund – This fund supports the exploration of any topic related to music teaching, pedagogy, or performance practice at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels.
- Student Composer Competition – is a national competition for all first place winners of the Provincial/Territorial composition competitions. Students range from as young as ages 5 or 6 up to 19, and are currently studying with a registered music teacher of CFMTA.
- The Memorial Pedagogy Award is given to the applicant receiving the highest mark in an Associate Diploma Level Pedagogy Exam from a national based teaching institution which offers exams in every province/territory.
- The Hugheen Ferguson Distinguished Teacher Award Recipients of this award are nominated by their CFMTA member peers, in recognition of their contributions in the field of music education and their service to the arts community.
- Honoured Teacher A gift that honours a music teacher, living or deceased, who has impacted a student’s musical journey. Funds dispersed to various programs and/or general funding.
