Walk For The Centre

October 6, 1:30-4 pm

The Walk for the Centre is a fundraiser for the Centretown Community Food Centre, which is a vital service in downtown Ottawa, providing fresh and non-perishable food to over 1500 people every month. It is a project of the Centretown Churches Social Action Committee, a registered charity that is made up of 22 downtown churches.

It will be a 2km or 4km walk along Queen Elizabeth Drive where we will walk together to show the necessity of working together to provide food security for all those in our community. Please note that we will be hosted by Church of the Ascension on 253 Echo Drive (as our usual location is unavailable), where we will take team photos, enjoy music by a local BarberShop quartet and then follow the Sons of Scotland Piper Band out to begin the walk. It has always been a fun event with much enthusiastic participation!

There will be prizes given for various categories provided by local businesses supporting the event- look out for prizes from Davidson Jewellers, Al’s Steakhouse, Il Negozio Nicastro, Wild Oat, Perfect Books, The Snow Goose, The Flag Shop and of course, from our grocery partners - Massines Independent, McKeens Metro, and Loblaws Isabella.

We are very grateful to our event sponsor, Flora Hall Brewing, for once again supporting the walkathon. The Food Centre operates four days a week, providing clients with nutritious food supplies – staples, fresh produce and dairy and meat – for up to five days, depending on family size. In 2023, as food prices rose, visitor numbers increased significantly as the year progressed- 12,437 individuals were served, including families with children and refugees. In 2024, we’ve seen the numbers go up every month. And with a 40% cut in food supplied by the Ottawa Food Bank ( due to lack of funds), funds are required to serve these members of our community.

Those accessing the services of the food centre face serious food insecurity. Do help raise funds to support those using the Centretown Community Food Centre by joining us or walking by yourself or with friends and family!
