Materia's mission is to disseminate and promote research and development in the field of crafts, nationally and internationally.

About Materia

Materia is a fine craft artist-run centre whose mandate is to disseminate and promote artistic enquiry and creation both nationally and abroad.

Materia seeks to broaden familiarity with and recognition of this art form and its artists in all their disciplinary diversity. Materia thus works to make known both the most important artists in the field and younger artists by presenting their work in by altering the general perception of handcrafted art objects as being limited to handicrafts and their sale in boutiques and crafts fairs. Materia’s commitment to the development of the discipline involves not only a change of mentality but also contributes to reflection and to the growth of a critical discourse around the work of artists in the field. Materia presents work found at the boundaries of design, scenography, visual arts and heritage.
