Each year, The Capilano Review (TCR) publishes three issues focused on contemporary writing and visual art. Each issue features 120+ pages of thought-provoking poetry, fiction, essays, interviews, art, and criticism by both emerging and established Canadian artists and writers working at the forefronts of their fields. Last year, the Review celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special-edition, three-volume “glossary,” collecting together new and archival work by over one hundred of the magazine’s award-winning writers and artists, among them Jordan Abel, Sonny Assu, Daphne Marlatt, Marian Penner Bancroft, Fred Wah, Raymond Boisjoly, Liz Howard, Judith Copithorne, Colin Browne, Christos Dikeakos, Wayde Compton, Gailan Ngan, Cecily Nicholson, Roy Kiyooka, Charlene Vickers, Nicole Brossard, Ian Williams, and Jin-me Yoon. The three issues are beautiful. We still cherish the printed artifact!
Our publishing program is joined by lively public events throughout the year, from issue launches to our new monthly reading series, "Dear Friends &," produced in collaboration with local artist-run centre Western Front. Our events are spirited, happy occasions, well attended by TCR’s large and warm community of readers and other supporters, as well as by authors whose work has been featured in the journal over the years. We also host an annual Writer-in-Residence program, connecting audiences with an established writer from Canada or abroad through a series of readings, workshops, and one-on-one manuscript consultations. We are one of very few organizations in the city that continue to program these kinds of literary presentations and events, bringing to life all the ways in which literature also exists off the page, in conversation with community.
All of this programming, and more, is threatened by inflation and ever-increasing production and operating costs. Help us raise the funds we need to meet our ambitious end-of-year goal of $15,000 by December 31, 2023 to secure our energetic vision for community connection through art and publishing, in Vancouver, across Canada, and beyond.
