about

Canadian Veteran Service Dog Unit (CVSDU)

CVDSU is a membership based, veteran operated registered charity.  Our mission is to train and provide service dogs, free of charge, to veterans or first responders, who have served and are suffering from PTSD and/or OSI.

Most people do not realize that PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) is more than a mental health disorder.  It is a disorder of the central nervous system with extreme amounts of adrenaline running through the body on a daily or hourly basis.  Adrenaline also sensitizes peripheral nerves – giving them the ability to signal pain in the absence of injury – resulting in chronic pain.

One of the ways those who struggle with PTSD have been able to recover and gain control over their lives again, has been with the assistance of a Service Dog.

CVDSU is a membership based, veteran operated registered charity.  Our mission is to train and provide service dogs, free of charge, to veterans or first responders, who have served and are suffering from PTSD.

To date, CVSDU has trained 30 teams, but we have a waiting list of 20 requests for service dogs.  Since the pandemic, the cost of buying a puppy, raising, socializing, and training it to be a service dog has increased dramatically. As restrictions caused by the pandemic ease, we would like to address our waiting list and provide more service dogs, but we can only do that with your help.

Please consider donating or becoming a partner. For more information, contact us at info@cvsdu.ca or visit our website,www.cvsdu.ca .

What people are saying

I am living proof that service dogs change lives and improve the quality of family life. The support I have received, the training that has been given, the comradery and peer support among our members and all the volunteers make the Unit work.
