A lifelong love of art and artistic expression, inspired by poetry
Denice Bustraen, a Canadian artist and entrepreneur, will be our special guest at CFUW-Northumberland’s annual scholarship fundraiser on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
Denice is a long-time resident of the remote North, having lived much of her life in Moosonee, Ontario.
Denice worked in the hospitality industry for a number of years, in Canada and the US, before returning to Moosonee to run her own business.
She is a member of Moose Cree First Nation, whose traditional territory follows the Moose River to the southern shores of James Bay.
In 2020, Denice sold her business and moved to Rice Lake where she has embraced her lifelong love of art and artist expression through acrylic on canvas.
Her love of white-water canoeing, hiking, and kayaking has taken her to some of the most beautiful settings in the entire province. These breathtaking vistas now feature heavily in her art and speak to her intimate connection with the natural wonders found in Ontario’s pristine wilderness.
Denice’s art can be found across Canada, including the Yukon, in the US, and in Europe. She has had three very successful exhibitions in Northumberland Arts gallery and shop and her work is in other galleries and juried shows in Ontario.
Her first exhibition, Among the Emerald Tresses, and titles of her works, were inspired by a John Keats poem “I stood tiptoe upon a little hill.”
Denice says “My art reflects bold coloured landscapes and forest escapes. Hailing from remote Moosonee, I pattern my creations after the beauty of the northern sky and Ontario’s outdoors.”
Her artistic endeavours include painting in acrylic and watercolour, stone carving, beadwork and card making. Recently she has been designing the window displays for the Northumberland Arts gallery and shop in Port Hope, to local acclaim by the town and tourist board.
