Our Mission

The Canadian Council for Refugees is a leading voice for the rights, protection, sponsorship, settlement, and well-being of refugees and migrants, in Canada and globally. CCR is driven by member organizations working with and for these communities from coast to coast to coast.

Committed to social justice and transformation by challenging racism, colonialism and intersecting oppressions, we undertake policy monitoring, advocacy, network building, and public education to empower members and communities to bring about systemic change.

About Canadian Council for Refugees

For over 40 years, the CCR has been the national voice on refugee protection and newcomer settlement in Canada, educating the public and promoting policies and programs that respect the rights of refugees and immigrants. With a membership of over 180 organizations serving refugees and immigrants, the CCR provides a place where individuals concerned about protecting refugees and supporting newcomers can respond to challenges in solidarity.

Through policy-analysis, research, public education, networking opportunities, and advocacy through media and government relations, we are active on a range of important issues.

Raising voices in favour of refugees The CCR speaks out about the impact on refugees of slow processing and unfair rules. We pay particular attention to the most vulnerable, including children.

Educating the public When Canadians know about the realities and contributions of refugees and immigrants, they welcome them into their communities.

Defending refugee rights in the courts The CCR ensures that the voice of refugees is heard in important court cases.

Reuniting families Many families are now reunited in Canada with some help from the CCR.

Engaging newcomer youth Newcomer youth have an enormous amount to contribute, when given the chance.

Facilitating networking across Canada The CCR connects organizations working across Canada to support refugees and immigrants. Together they share information, identify emerging issues and plan joint action to address the pressing issues affecting refugees and immigrants in Canada.
