"Education is the foundation for success." ~ Peter Gzowski
The Campbell River Literacy Association (CRLA) is dedicated to empowering individuals and strengthening our community through literacy initiatives across the Campbell River area and Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Through our programs, we support learners of all ages and backgrounds, and work closely with community service providers to create opportunities for growth and development.
Our mission is built on the belief that a learner’s success is not just an individual achievement, but a gift to the community at large. We are a team of passionate volunteers, united by the vision that the impact of education ripples outward, creating a more informed, capable, and resilient society.
Learner-Centered Approach
We understand that each learner brings a wealth of personal experience, knowledge, and ideas to the table. Our programs are designed to meet people where they are, helping them to build upon what they already know while providing the tools, resources, and guidance needed to achieve new goals. Whether navigating the formal education system or pursuing informal learning based on life’s changing needs, we assist learners in creating pathways for success tailored to their unique abilities and aspirations.
Supporting Early Literacy and Youth Engagement
We recognize the critical importance of early literacy in shaping a child’s future. That's why we sponsor and support early years programming, elementary school reading initiatives, and youth mentorship opportunities. These efforts aim to empower the next generation, providing them with the foundational skills and confidence to succeed academically and in life. Every year, in celebration of International Family Literacy Day (January 27), we host week-long community events to honor parents and caregivers as their children’s first and most important teachers.
Advocacy for Inclusive Literacy
At CRLA, we advocate for the equitable access of information for everyone, particularly those facing barriers to literacy. Our awareness campaigns tackle issues like plain language for businesses and service providers, bridging the technology divide for seniors, and fostering life skills, financial literacy, civic engagement, and health literacy. By creating resources that are accessible and easy to understand, we aim to break down the obstacles that prevent people from fully participating in society. Our goal is to shift perspectives—to "adjust the lens" of those who work with individuals facing literacy challenges—and develop solutions that enable everyone to thrive in our information-rich, fast-paced world.
Honoring the Lands and Stewards of these Territories
The offices of the Campbell River Literacy Association are situated on the traditional territories of the Ligʷiłdax̌ʷ Nations, the WeiWaiKai, WeiWaiKum and Kwiakah peoples. We recognize their enduring connection to this territory and work to build partnerships that foster respect, collaboration, and shared growth. We deeply honor our relationship with these nations and the broader Indigenous communities who have called the lands of British Columbia and Canada home for thousands of years.
Your Support Makes a Difference
At CRLA, we believe that literacy is not just a skill—it is a gateway to opportunity, empowerment, and a brighter future for all. We invite you to join us in this important work. Your support—whether through donations, volunteering, or partnership—helps us provide the tools, resources, and mentorship that can change lives. Together, we can create lasting, positive impact in our community, one learner at a time.
Thank you for helping us build a more literate, inclusive, and thriving community.
