Calgary Food Bank Emergency Food Hampers

Together, we fight hunger and its root causes, because no one should go hungry.

Through our Emergency Food Hamper Program we are ensuring that Calgarians are able to access food safely during this difficult time. We know Calgarians, who were already struggling through tough economic times, will need increased food support as they manoeuvre through job losses and increased expenses as we continue to work our way through the COVID-19 crisis. 

Our immediate focus is meeting urgent needs now and planning for the future as demand will continue for months to come. 

Since the onset of the pandemic, the Calgary Food Bank has taken cautious and deliberate measures to make sure that client needs for food support are accommodated, while protecting the health and safety of everyone involved. In response we have changed our distribution model to operate as drive-thru food bank. We are following AHS guidelines and social distance protocols as the health and safety of the community is our main priority. 
We also had to purchase new QR Code technology in establishing this new distribution method. This new technology gives our clients and referral agencies the opportunity to share their unique identifier and safely allow for someone else pick up their Emergency Food Hamper. This helps to address the food needs of clients who are unable to reach us due to isolation or who are considered a more vulnerable population.  
Gathering restrictions have impacted our ability to utilize the volunteer work force we typically rely on. Every week hundreds of volunteers have sorted food donations, but due to a smaller workforce this process takes much longer. Therefore we have had to purchase food so that hamper requests are filled immediately. 
We have additional increased expenditures as we have had to hired additional staff to support with this new model to ensure we are able to meet the needs of the community. 

We are truly community owned and community supported. We know that Calgarians are struggling in light of the ever-evolving COVID-19 crisis and thanks to you, we will continue to ensure that no one goes hungry.
